Sara’s Acts of Kindness – Our WHAT
What are we about? Why yet ANOTHER Childhood Cancer Foundation?
Childhood Cancer research currently receives approximately 4% of the federal funding for cancer research. Sara and many other children die as a direct result of this lack of funding. When Sara relapsed there wasn’t a treatment protocol for her.
Sara LOVED doing kind things for others, and the kindest thing I can imagine doing for another childhood cancer mama is making sure that there is research into treatment options for their kids that does not leave them in the position I am in; I want there to be no more bereaved childhood cancer mamas.
Cancer Community
Currently there are some foundations that raise money for research. You have probably heard of St. Baldricks, where people shave their heads to raise money and awareness for their children with cancer. Or perhaps Alex’s Lemonade Stand, where people sell lemonade to raise money and awareness for children with cancer. Sara’s Acts of Kindness is about doing things to bring a smile to someone else’s face to raise money and awareness for kids with cancer.
What We Have Been Doing
Recently we dropped off 31 Scentsy buddies to Inova Fairfax Children’s Hospital hematology/oncology to bring joy to the children going through cancer treatments. Scentsy buddies are soft sweet stuffed animals that contain a Scent Pak. Sara had several of them and truly loved them. It was really amazing to bring these lovies to the hospital and I hope the children love theirs as much as Sara did.
We are planning on doing a Ronald McDonald House event. Sara and I stayed at the Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia, PA for 6 weeks during her radiation treatment. Sara’s Acts of Kindness will be volunteering to make dinner for the families there, as well as dropping off bags of goodies for the families that are staying there. We will include a card that explains about our mission and why we do what we do.
Donations received and monies raised will go to the Sara Willis Research Fund. We hope to fund research that will lead to better treatments, and eventually help more children survive. The current treatments that kids with cancer receive are brutal and barbaric. Kids are getting limbs amputated; their skulls cut into, and their little bodies often do not respond well to these treatments. The children who survive have tons of long term side effects that affect their bodies for the rest of their lives. They need better options. We want to give those to them.
Sara’s Acts of Kindness Launch
We are all so excited to launch this foundation and hope that it will bring something new to the Childhood cancer crew. We hope that it will launch a trickle down effect of bringing smiles and being kind to each other while bringing light to the issues that surround the childhood cancer community. We hope that as we do these kindnesses for others, that they will remember Sara and the impact she had on the lives of all that she touched. She is the reason that we are doing what we do.
